If someone had told me at school that being able to verbally express myself would have the biggest impact on my confidence, earning power, and ability to influence and connect with people, I would have practised EVERY DAY.
Yet in my experience, it's rare to find schools or workplaces that deliver consistent training on how to talk about our ideas, beliefs, values or desires, in a way that makes people sit up and take notice.
To be clear: I’m not interested in helping you sound palatable. I want to help you be powerful.
I never expected public speaking to be part of my career, but after two years running Be More Pirate I’ve delivered almost 100 talks, online and off, and spoken on almost as many podcasts. I’m no Brene Brown, but I’ve learnt a lot about what works and what doesn’t.
It doesn’t matter if you have no aspirations to give speeches, improving your verbal communication has a significant impact on daily interactions like speaking up in meetings, talking to friends and family about difficult issues, general networking or going for job interviews.
We’ll cover different aspects of verbal influencing, including:
In doing this work, we’ll get to the heart of what you care about, which will likely involve doing some deeper work exploring the blockers preventing you from speaking up. This is the only way to be the best speaker you can be.
I’m opening to working with anyone but I’m particularly keen to support people who aren't usually up front or aren't confident putting themselves in the spotlight. Having scrutinised the stages of many conferences, (including one in 2020 where I was the only female speaker, and there were no people of colour!?), we need to change the perception of what so called ‘experts’ look and sound like.
I’m fortunate to have gained a lot of experience very quickly; I’ve given some excellent speeches, and some pretty bad ones, and part of the deal is learning to handle failures alongside the adrenaline highs, and not allowing yourself to give up. There are plenty of easy practical steps to take that will guarantee you improve. It will make you feel 10x more confident, but (as my coach says), you have to put in the reps.
I would never try and sell what I don’t wholeheartedly believe in. I trained as a coach with a community called Enlifted, and I work with a fellow Enlifted coach every week, which has been the most important investment in myself that I’ve ever made. More about Enlifted here.
The cost of a 1.5 hr session is £120, or £600 for six sessions.
